✎ The Kingmaker (2020)
Centered on the indomitable character of Imelda Marcos, The Kingmaker examines, with intimate access, the Marcos family’s improbable return to power in the Philippines. The film explores the disturbing legacy of the Marcos regime and chronicles Imelda’s present-day push to help her son, Bongbong, win the vice-presidency. To this end, Imelda confidently rewrites her family’s history of corruption, replacing it with a narrative of a matriarch’s extravagant love for her country. In an age when fake news manipulates elections, Imelda’s comeback story serves as a dark fairy tale.

✎ Q&A with Jose Maria Sison
Professor Jose Maria Sison was the founding chairperson of the Communist Party of the Philippines, a revolutionary organization that led the armed movement against the Marcos dictatorship. Sison himself was imprisoned under Marcos for 9 years and currently resides in the Netherlands as a political refugee after his passport was cancelled by the Philippine government in 1987. He is the Chief Political Consultant of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) in the peace negotiations between the NDFP and the Government of the Republic of the Philippines. He is also Chairperson Emeritus of the International League of Peoples’ Struggle, an anti-imperialist and democratic formation that seeks to promote, support and develop the anti-imperialist and democratic struggles of the peoples of the world.

✎ Stichting Linangan
This event is organized by Studio/K in co-operation with Linangan NL – Willem Geertman Art & Culture Network (LINANGAN), a non-profit foundation of Dutch and Filipino-Dutch persons who undertake activities to inform the Dutch public about the situation in the Philippines. Stichting Linangan strives to achieve its aim mainly through art and cultural activities. Linangan hopes to cultivate positive social values such as concern for the rights and welfare of others, care for the environment and the willingness to work with collective effort and cooperation. The founding of Linangan was inspired by the life and sacrifice of Willem Geertman, a Dutch volunteer worker in the Philippines who actively worked for the rights and welfare of workers and indigenous people until he was murdered in 2012.
