COMMENT OF PROF. JOSE MARIA ON DUTERTE´S MANIA FOR MASS MURDER

The number of extrajudicial killings, now more than 23,000, can easily fill up a mega-stadium. Duterte looks like he is going to fulfill his promise of killing 100,000 to fatten the fish of Manila Bay in the next four years, unless he is stopped and ousted soon enough.

Long after he is gone, the nation will suffer from the extreme criminalization and corruption of the police and military forces by a mad tyrant who openly incites mass murder, guarantees impunity and uses his huge confidential and intelligence funds to reward gory frame-ups and mass murder.

The Philippine National Police has recorded more than 23,000 killings since President Rodrigo Duterte assumed office almost two years ago, data from the PNP Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management showed.

Citing DIDM figures, PNP spokesperson Senior Superintendent Benigno Durana Jr. said the PNP recorded 23,327 homicide cases under investigation from July 2016 to May 2018. This translates to an average of 33 deaths daily.

Out of this number, the PNP said only 2,649 were drug-related incidents while 10,594 were considered non-drug related. Durana said the motives for the 10,084 remaining incidents remained “unknown.”

As regards the filing of cases related to the killings, 12,339 complaints have been filed before the prosecutor’s office and 6,830 charges have been filed before the courts. The rest, Durana said, are considered “cold cases.”

Durana said the PNP Oversight Committee revisited the data on homicide incidents and other crimes in order to “establish accurate and reliable data where we can measure investigative performance of field units nationwide; use it as input to crafting more effective strategy against incidents of homicide and other crimes; and further improve the crime solution efficiency of all investigative units of the PNP.”

The latest update of the #RealNumbersPH or the consolidated data on the anti-illegal drug campaign showed that 4,279 drug suspects have been killed, while 143,335 others have been arrested from July 1, 2016 to May 15, 2018.

A total of 143,335 drug personalities were arrested in 99,485 anti-drug operations conducted during the same period.

The consolidated data also showed that a total of 2,678.61 kilograms of shabu worth P14.34 billion have been seized while the total value of seized drugs, controlled precursors and essential chemicals and laboratory equipment were pegged at P20.77 billion. —NB, GMA News
