BACOLOD CITY, Negros Occidental–President Rodrigo Duterte has earned a nickname among the Bangsamoro, his former professor revealed.
In a statement, National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) chief political consultant Jose Maria Sison said Duterte is being called “duti” (poison) by the Maranaos and Iranon for having proclaimed martial law against them and having brought death and destruction during the siege of Marawi City.
Sison also said the derisive term was due to Duterte’s placement of the Bangsamoro in humiliation, hunger, disease and grave difficulties in refugee centers during and after the siege.
He added that the displaced Marawi residents dread of never being able to return to their former homes due to the re-designation of the city as a military reservation as in colonial times.
“The Maranaos and Iranons consider him a ‘duti’ and traitor, especially for claiming to be a Maranao descendant,” Sison said.
Sison said the displaced residents hold Duterte responsible for challenging the Maute group to attack Marawi following an earlier attack on Butig town.
Sison said Duterte “refuse[d] to avail of the help of the traditional ruling clans and other honest third parties in negotiating peace and settling the armed conflict temporarily or in a lasting way.”
Duterte has repeatedly claim he is part Maranao and Moro.
‘How did Sison know?’
Sandugo Movement of Moro and Indigenous Peoples for Self-Determination co-chairperson Jerome Abba expressed surprised that Sison knows of the Bangsamoro’s derisive nickname for the president.
“How did he know that?” Abba asked.
“[But] that is true. In our Bangsamoro communities—not just in Lanao—Duterte is called ‘duti’ because of his terrorism and fascism against the Bangsamoro,” Abba told Kodao.
The Moro leader said Duterte caused the death of 800 individuals due to aerial bombings while 400 thousand individuals were forced to evacuate.
“You know, we (the Bangsamoro) have been through many wars with the colonizers and the puppet (Manila) regimes. But Duterte’s war against is is worst,” Abba added. # (Raymund B. Villanueva)
