Communist Party of the Philippines founder Jose Maria “Joma” Sison said they want to resume peace negotiations with the government in a “country near the Philippines.”

In a Facebook post, Sison said that he needs to have an assurance of safety if he comes back for peace talks.

“In my particular case as chief political consultant of the NDFP (National Democratic Front of the Philippines), I cannot give up the legal protection that I enjoy under the Refugee Convention and the European Convention on Human Rights and practically surrender myself to a regime and its armed minions that are notorious for gross human rights violations,” the communist leader wrote.

On December 5, President Rodrigo Duterte ordered Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III, the chairman of the government peace panel. to fly to The Netherlands to speak with Sison, who has been in self-exile in the Netherlands since 1987 due to alleged persecution by the Marcos regime.

Despite failed attempts, Duterte said he could not give up on the peace talks with the rebels

“I cannot leave the Netherlands without first getting the political and legal guarantees of several pertinent governments to retain my rights to non-refoulement and Article 3 of the European Convention for the noble purpose of talking peace with Duterte in a country near the Philippines,” said Sison.
